Celtic Cross Collection

Ancient Celtic High Cross The Celtic Cross, also known as the Ionic cross, is one of the most popular Celtic motifs of all time. The roots of this ancient symbol predate Christianity, but this symbol has become an integral part of Christianity in the Celtic culture. The Celtic cross features a traditional Christian cross with a circle centered on the intersection.

Large stone versions of this ''ringed cross'' have been erected in Ireland and across Britain since the 7th century. Called High Crosses, many of these ancient monuments still stand today.

Smaller versions of these monuments are also commonly used as Irish tombstones.

The meaning of the distinctive circle at the center of the Celtic cross cannot be definitively determined, but there are many theories. Some assert that the circle represents God's never-ending love as evidenced by Christ's sacrifice upon the cross. Others assert that the circle is representative of the halo of Christ. Still others contend the circle represents the endless mystery of Christ's resurrection. While the true meaning of the unique Celtic cross shape may never be conclusively known, the Celtic cross is firmly ingrained in Celtic culture throughout the world.
